Trimming Palm Trees the Right Way

Washingtonia Fan Palms should be trimmed to remove dead fronds and flower stalks and trimmed up no more than 10 and 2 clock hand positions. Phoenix Date Palms should be trimmed to remove dead fronds and fruit stalks and trimmed up to no more than 3 and 9 clock hand positions.

Removing all live healthy fronds below a 45-degree angle from horizontal is not an acceptable pruning practice and could lead to bud damage, insect and disease infestations, and disfigurement "pencil pointing." Fronds removed should be severed close to the petiole base without damaging living trunk tissue.

Palm peeling (skinning, shaving) should consist of the removal of only the dead frond bases at the point they make contact with the trunk without damaging living trunk tissue. R.O.
